4/4 French Violin, probably by Nicholas Auguste Chappuy, C1760

Born in Mirecourt in 1730, Chappuy began working in his hometown as a luthier before moving to Paris where he produced huge quantities of instruments in a variety of styles and qualities. It was once theorised that there was a second Chappuy helping in the workshop, however this has since been proven false. Chappuy stood for traditional artisanry and he redefined the possibilities of these traditions in his flourishing workshop while also displaying a confident sense of what the market wanted. His approach to lutherie was a rational one, which focussed on the essentials and keeping things simple, an approach that would ultimately lead to his success.

Proud to present this fine example of the maker’s work which demonstrates broad and bold edges and an expressive scroll. The sound is rich and velvety, with excellent clarity and projection. It is in very-well restored condition and would most definitely suit the professional player.
