4/4 French Violin by Charles J. B. Collin-Mezin III, Mirecourt, 1943

Son of the great French-maker, Charles J. B. Collin-Mezin (dit père), Charles J. B. Collin-Mezin II adopted the additional ‘fils’ to distinguish himself from his father’s work. Collin-Mezin fils inherited the Mirecourt business upon the death of his father in 1923 and, for a long time, he continued producing instruments based on his father’s model, however he later adopted a more personal style.

Grandson of the great French-maker, Charles J. B. Collin-Mezin, Charles J. B. Collin-Mezin III inherited the family business upon the death of his father, Charles Collin-Mezin fils, in 1934.

The Mirecourt atelier continued to flourish throughout the 20th century, producing many fine instruments with rich sound qualities. Several prominent 19th and 20th century violinists favoured the instruments of the Collin-Mezin family, including Joseph Joachim, Sivori, Scott Tixier, Léonard, Marie Tayau, and Jules Armingaud, who considered the sound quality of their work comparable to Stradivari. Historically, the family were winners of gold and silver medals at the Paris Exhibitions in 1878, 1889, and 1900 and the founding Charles J. B. Collin-Mezin was himself an Officier de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts.

This violin has a Two-piece back and bears a deep red-brown varnish that was typical of the Collin-Mezin workshop. It has excellent projection and the response is quick from this violin, allowing for much flexibility and nuance in the bow.The condition is very good, and the sound is round and warm. This instrument would suit the advanced student or early professional player.
