English Double Bass Lab Panormo Model Hawkes & Son, London, 1898

Established in 1865 in North London, Hawkes & Son was a highly successful company manufacturing and supplying instruments primarily to orchestras and military bands.

Hawkes & Son manufactured three models of double bass, the Professor, the Concert and the Panormo of which the Panormo was the top grade instrument. Exclusively manufactured in England using the finest materials, the Panormo is characterised by its violin outline, deep ribs and swell back which also displays the letter H in purfling just below the back button.  The brass half machine plates are branded Hawkes & Son London on the lower edge of the plate.

The instrument listed here was made in 1898 and bears the original label reading “ Panormo Model Double Bass Manufactured by Hawkes & Son London 1898”

This bass is currently fitted with a mechanical extension which could be easily replaced with a gated version or alternatively the bass could be successfully converted to a 5 string instrument.  With a big rounded sound and vast range of tonal qualities, this bass certainly offers huge potential for the orchestral or jazz musician alike.
