4/4 German Violin attributed to a member of the Klotz Family, C1780

The titanic Mittenwaldian Klotz family are a long-established line of luthiers dating back to the early 18thcentury. Very little is known about the founder, Matthias Klotz, who was the son of a local tailor, nor about his training or how he came to be a luthier. The rumours that Matthias studied with Nicolo Amati and Jacobus Stainer have never been confirmed which calls into question how the fine and enigmatic instruments of his early career came to be. The nearby Karwendal mountains supplied Klotz with a rich supply of excellent tone woods and Mittenwald’s premium location along the trans-Alpine trade route offered many merchantry advantages. Furthermore, Klotz had almost no local competition.

The Klotz family, which spanned eight generations, maintained an epicentral role in the violin making of their hometown until the late 18th century. Many Klotz instruments survive today and, despite the individualistic nature of each maker, they demonstrate a consistency of fine craftsmen who were able to polymerise creativity with family tradition. Despite the stylistic differences, the Klotz model unifies the instruments with moderately high tables, typical lines in the fluting and edging, curved pegboxes and bold scrolls.

This violin has a bright and sparkly sound and is very responsive to nuances in the bow. It has lots of quality in the sound and would suit the advanced student and professional player.
