Born in London in 1901, Ernest Francis Lant was a prolific workman most recognised for his production of double basses. It is estimated that he made an impressive 97 basses in his lifetime. During the 1950's and 1960's, he specialised in 5 stringed basses based on a small Testore model. These quickly found favour with orchestral players in London and the provinces and a significant number were consequently made.
This bass is a lovely example of Lant's work. Violin outline with a flat back and labelled "Ernest Francis Lant, Sevenoaks, Kent, No. 408, anno 1974" and signed Ernest F. Lant. Whilst its small proportions make it ideal for solo work it has a full rich sound which can equally hold its own in an orchestral setting.
